best way to get PC boards from ExpressPCB to a board house

Hi all,

I need to get a few boards and use ExpressPCB software.

seems the software is proprietary and needs to
be put into something that can pump out a Gerber file.

Any ideas on how to move the file ?

I have tried to convert the Express software to a Gerber file with no luck.
Express software, is as you say, proprietary - very. I've talked to several
PCB companies about making boards from the Express file and they all say "no
way".

I wish I had a program as easy to use as Expresss that would put out a Gerber
file.

Now you know why the software is free -- because you can't use it and take
your business to another board shop. You will also notice when you print out
the layout its on a gray background -- no doubt this is so you can't use
clear film and make your own boards.

Actually, you can save the file as a drawing and in (of all things)
MS Paint, change the background color.

I have done this for iron transfer boards. PITA and only useful on
very simple boards and oneies and twosies.

Dave
(always wanted to say onesies and twosies, alas, I rerealy get the
chance, but hey, I got to say 'alas' anyway ?)

I think they fixed that "feature" in version 2.6.2. It only does a save as
in a .pcb format. Doing a screen capture and pasting it into Paint won't
really work on anything with small traces.

I had them do some prototype boards for me, and while they cost more than I
could actually sell them for in the real world, I got what I needed. Their
service was very fast and when I had a question about how the software did
certain things I got an email back from them within a day.

I can do a screen capture and put it in Paint. As we discussed at
lenght some time ago, iron tranfer is cool when the traces are big.

I would never attempt an iron transfer with traces going
between pins. it takes me longer to fix.

I've just done a print out of the trace pattern for my Cassette Deck
controller to transparent film on my HP deskjet 640c. The HP was set to
highest quality.

Came out fine.

There is a slightly gray background, but, from past experience, when
exposing the negative (or going straight to positive PCB material), the gray
background will be too light to make any difference.

The reason it is free is so you will use their service. You could spend
$500-$5000 for professional software. I have used both and I like Express
PCB because its easy to use and I cant even etch my own boards for the price
from them. Time is $$ and the time spent etching and drilling just isn't
worth it.

The easiest way to do this is to purchase the gerber from ExpressPCB. We
did this when we went from prototype to production and it cost us $60. Then
the production shop can edit this file if you have small changes.

Well worth the 60 bucks we had to spend.

I just printed out something with mine (V2.6.2) and it
also printed the grid dots, therefore making it
unusable for photo trasfer...Is your version older?

You can turn off the grid dots on the screen, but I have not verified they
go away on the printed copy.

Stampers,

If you all are looking for a free PCB editor and you have a Mac then
look no further. Osmond PPC is a free PCB editor. Works like a charm.
I output a mirrored Postscript file and then convert that to PDF then
print to laser printer. I have made a dozen or more boards with this
tool on my iBook and using DynaArt toner transfer paper. It can
import net lists but I usually draw the traces by hand like Express
PCB software. Building new parts is easy. Just set your pad size and
your grid spacing and build your parts. I've had good luck with fine
traces(10 mil) and small parts such as 0603 resistors and TSSOPS
using a Monokote iron with the max heat setting and light pressure.
The key is not too much pressure to squish the traces and enough to
make the toner stick to the board. I can send pics of the boards that
I have made with this package if you like.

http://www.swcp.com/~jchavez/osmond.html

Now if you are a Windoz user then the best I can suggest would be
Eagle Cad. but there is limitations with there free verson. Trying to
clean up the ExpressPCB files are a waste of time - been there and
tried that.

Print screen

then paste into paint

then you can fill any color with any other color
lines.

that is how to make the background go away.

the problem is (remember the simple boared note ?)
that the actual size is not automatatially correct.
the height and width can be off. the ratio can be off
heck, the radio can be off to. (same old songs just repalyed anyway)

Print your board.

verify all the stuff is correct.

check out the photo transfer stuff (is it on Al's Page?)

get a

#1100 FilmOpaquer
Fine Point - Black
Mark-tex corp., Englewood NJ 07631

pen.

these work better than a sharpie.

fill in any and every hole and trace on the board.

get some tiny tiny tiny drills #78 will pass the
leads of a 1/4 watt resitor. you'll need slightly larger
for chips.

get the drills and a pin drill at www.use-enco.com
This is really a small holder for your drill press
to hold the tiny drills.

Use a magnyfing glass to make triple sure there are no
reflections from the copper after you transfered
and touched up. you can always scratch lines between
pads if you need to.

Check
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Homebrew_PCBs
for more details and links.

Ben,

Osmond kinda grows on you. I usually use it to layout boards by hand.
For the price I can't complain. I have layed out a single sided PCB
with a BS2p40 interperter IC, ceramic res, I^C, and 200 mA regulator.
Had to use 0603 and 0805 zero ohm jupmers to route traces in between
but it works as a functional BS2p40 replacement that I can build for
$30. I can plug it into a breadboard for quick prototyping or solder
it directly to perf board for permanent use. Next I'm planning on
makeing a BS2p40 development platform that my homemade stamp will
plug into or a Parallax stamp can plug in. Will have an LCD
connector, 300 pin breadboard, serial connector, 5V 2A supply, one
wire interface connectors, and some servo connectors. I plan on using
Osmond to lay it out in a 6" x 6" single sided PCB. The FIRST team
that I help out with will get 2 of these as soon as I get time to lay
it out. Total cost with my homemade stamp is about $55.

Oh well, it's still sitting on my HD, so I may have another play with it
some time. Maybe after I get a few ExpressPCB boards out the way first
(would be a pain starting those all over again...). :-)

cheers,

Ben.

It is v2.6.2.

I get around the grid problem on printouts by:

Where there are no tracks, I always put in a ground plane if possible. This
also reduces the amount of copper that needs to be etched away.

Therefore, if there are any dots, they are few, and I find they do not get
in the way anyway.

cheers,

Ben.

I've been using BPECS/Best Proto for several years now. It was only a
few bucks to register. It's a little steep on the learning curve as
well, but I'm by no means a pro and have turned out some acceptable
boards with it.

I just made a few boards using Ares Lite

www.labcenter.co.uk

I have tried others but have found this one to be somewhat painless and you
can print on the free version (the registered version only costs 20euro?)
For another 20euro? you can have gerber output, I think. I have had
surprisingly good luck with the sharpie method. I am anxious to try the
toner transfer method. :)

And it performs autorouting of traces!
