Hello all,

Can you please give me directions on what the smallest size stepping
motor that is commercially available? I'm looking for a stepping
morot that is no more than 2"x1" (LxW). Not sure if there even
available in this size. If so, could you please let me know where I
can purchase one. Thanks a million!!!

I have a "Seiko/Epson stepper motor in my hand that measures 1 5/8" square
(mounting plate) by 1/2" thick. I think I bought it from DigiKey.com. The
model number is "STP-42N196S" but I think it is no longer in mfr however
they (Digikey) have many others to choose from and they all have data sheets
    on line.

Look in your junk pile and grab a dead 3.5" floppy drive. The stepper
motor that moves the head back and forth is a small stepper about 1"
    diameter by about 1" long.

If you don't have any dead floppy drives handy, just visit your friendly
neighborhood computer shop - they probably have a few dozen sitting around.

    Dwayne,

What is the step size in these motors? I would guess 1.8 degrees, for
    200 steps/rev, but I could be wrong.

all come to mind, they were surplusing out little 10mmX16mm round bipolar
stepping motors used in some kind of a camera focusing unit. Some come with
the focusing unit, some without. They also had the same motors in some kind
of a tape head positioning device as well.
Those are the smallest steppers that I know about.

    well,

there is a stepper motor in a Swatch watch which is well under that size.
It's small enough that you could probably run it directly off the Stamp pins.

You might be careful which ones (RMB Smoovy) you choose though.
I have two pairs of gear motors and they work fine off of DC voltage.
    No stepper motor driver needed.

Don't know if it's the smallest. I have used Arsape motors with great success!
Here is one of the smaller ones. http://www.arsape.ch/pdf/motors/eAM_0820.pdf
    I think µ-Mo sells them: http://www.micromo.com/

This topic is very useful to me, because I'm looking for a small stepper
for a medical device. But I recommend following Mike Walsh's reference
example because it includes a full set of specifications, such as step
size and holding torque, that are crucial to most applications, as
    opposed to just physical size.
