I have to use the transistor way, I cannot use stepper IC's cause this is a
lab for school, and the point is to be able to use it with transistors!

that chip (ULN2803)is NOT a stepper driver chip, it is
a high current darlington transistor array. so they
are still transistors, just in a dip format. i see
where your lab is going, i just wanted to clarify that
point. do a google search for "how to drive a
transistor" or something of that variety, there are
tons of links, or your EE text books should have many
examples. here is a nice link, should tell all u need
    to know:
    http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electronic/transwitch.html

here is a stepper example using the BS1 that gives a
brief explanation of the "how/why" rather than just
the code, it is application note #6. i havent played
with steppers much, perhaps someone else has info to
    share.

    hope that helps you out,

    Klutch,

The basic stamp can provide stepper motor drive can't it?
If so then driving the stepper motor from the stamp would require a device
(circuit) to provide increased current. This is why I have suggested the
ULN2803, as it is a damn simple device providing a high current output, that
is simple to use, ie requiring power, ground and an output from the stamp.
    What do you think?

    Regards,

    Dwain.

yes, i could not agree more, and i would probably use
the same chip, if teh stepper were sized correctly to
its current supply abilities. i was merely pointing
out to Brad Hughson, the originator of teh question,
that the ULN2803 is not a stepper driver IC like that
made by Elab, check out www.elabinc.com and the
    EDE1200 or 1204.
for his lab, he has to just use regular transistors
like the 2n222 or 2n3904, that was his question on how
to bias them. i hope that clarifies where i was
    coming from.
