single digit backlit LCD

I have a customer that wants a miniaturized product with a single digit backlit
LCD display. I have worked with LCD's in the past but have not seen any that
were single character. Could use a 7 segment LED but this is to be a battery
powered device, and the LED's would probably draw more current than the
LCD+backlight.
Has anyone seen an LCD that would come close?
