Any recommendations for a book on using ICs?

I've been having a hard time understanding how to use non SPI/I2C
chips Even some SPI chips that don't have examples on the net give me
headaches. Is there such a thing as a book on using ICs? If so, does
anyone have a favorite book?
I know the simplest solution is to stick with SPI/I2C but for some
reason those are quite difficult to find around here in non-bulk
quantities. Besides, the fun in this hobby is the learning, not in
what I make [noparse]:D[/noparse]
