Line Driver Needed??

i am building a stamp powered home security system,
state machine style i think, but in any of my
projects, i have never driven this length of wire
(figure ~300' max from the base station with 24 guage
phone line along the perimeter of the room).
1) at what distance do i need to add some sort of
driver or amplifier for the signal lines? is there a
rule of thumb or a good website to reference??
2) what drivers would you then recommend???
3) anyone out there set up anything interesting other
than the usual camera, keypad entry, and door/window
switches??? i figure that as long as i am at it, i am
gonna wire up some small battery operated emergency
lighting with a relay to "sense" when the power goes
out. sure beats candles or flashlights.
anyway, if someone has some insight....fire away,
thanks.
ross

300' of 24 gauge wire should not have much resistance.
The voltage drop across this should not be a concern.
I run a 1 horsepower pump on 6 gauge 1200' total circuit footage with no
problems, 24 ga. should be able to carry a milliamp for many miles.
