I found the problem, it was a wayward quote... Ended up with extra
spaces at the end of a string which were printing right where that
number was supposed to be. It'd erase the old numbers then the
numbers were drawn again - thus the strobing.
But thanks for the hints and the links - printed out the stuff this
time and stuffed them into my binder of datasheets - the one that is
growing at an altogether alarming rate.
