Sorry for using this forum for a non-STAMP related question, but I
know that you can help! I just got a new laptop from work (an IMB
Tinkpad T23). I want to keep the AC Power Adapter at work and have
one at home. I have an old AC Power Adapter from a Thinkpad that I
had a few years ago. They look similar, but not identical. The plug
that fits in the computer is the same as the new one. On the old AC
Adapter, the specs are Output of 16 volts at 3.36 amps. The new AC
adapter that came with the new laptop indicates 16 volts at 4.5 amps.
Do you think it is o.k. to use the AC Adapter that is rated 1.14 amps
lower than the one supplied?
Thanks for your help on this one... see, I told you you guys would be
able to answer this for me!

Probably NOT a good idea. My guess, based upon similar units that I have
seen, is that these power supplies are switch mode units that have hard
limits somewhat above the nameplate rating. A further guess is that the
newer laptop has a better (larger, newer) battery than the old laptop and
that it can be charged at a higher rate than the old one.
The charging circuitry in the laptop is going to assume that it can charge
at the maximum design rate, which the old power supply cannot handle. This
will most likely cause problems.

it could still be useful.
Check the power draw. it may be that some add-on features, CD or
somehting made the higher powe supply necessary.
