help: linear, position, displacement sensors

hi I am looking to build or buy a postion sensor that can tie into my
stamp. something that can sense in close ranges at about 6 to 8 cm,
and is light and mobile to sit on a small robot, (a med app) also one
for the knee.
the technology doesnt matter, know of any sensors or even a site i
can find something like this at?

One or the other should do the trick.
