Friendly Greetings from Downunder :)

It's the first time that I address this circle, apologizing
beforehand for any (unintentional) break of etiquette this group may
adhere to.

A few days ago, I acquired a QV356 Speech Board from Parallax, to
enhance the functioning of my BOE-bot. The speech board comes with
some downloadable software; among others, a little programme that
demonstrates the basic speech and sound capabilities of the board.

The progr. includes a set (list) of Standard Vocabulary that allows
for the testing of words and sentences. (Sounds can be tested as
well.)

For the words to be called up for replay, one keys in a number that
corresponds to a given word -- i.e. wav.file. For example: #171
equals the word 'properly', and keying in #213 replays 'wall', etc.

Alas, no matter what number I key in, the BOE-bot returns only the
word 'alpha', and the letter 'a' and 'b' a couple of times.

The sentences are stored in a Data Array in the programme. For these
to be tested, one simply calls them up with entering a digit in the
Debug window (menu).

As for their replay -- only those words that come after the
letter 'L' are correctly replayed in the five example sentences.
Words in a sentence that commence with a letter ranging from 'A'
to 'L' are out of sync by one position in the Standard Vocabulary
list. For example: Sentence number two "all systems function
properly" is replayed as "am systems good-bye properly" (the
words 'all' and 'function' are replaced with the proceeding
words 'am' and 'good-bye'.

The complete vocab. list ranges from 0 to 219. From 0 to 9 the replay
is garbled (a mixture of a, b, and alpha's). From 9 to 133 the
vocabulary is out of sync by one position (see prior example). From
134 to 219 the vocab does correspond to samesaid (decimal)numbers.

Any idea why the approx. first half of the vocab list has gone on
safari, while the second half is in tune with the numbers?

The progr. has been updated last in May this year, and I am pretty
sure the ladies and gentlemen from Parallax ensured its correctness.
That leaves me with the dreadful suspicion of a faulty speech board;
even with an uncooperative BS2e stamp (???)

I am a novice in speech and sound matters, thus any feedback from the
group would, indeed, be genuinely welcomed.

I wish you all a rewarding day.
Harold

    G'Day Mate:

I'll take a shot at this. I also have the speach board and it works
great. The QV board gets very unhappy if the "file" number is out of range.
If you are SURE you are sending the correct values to the board my next
guess would be to check and make sure you are using the correct baudrate
divisor for the BS2E. It is NOT the same for all the flavors of the Stamp.
Your baud rate divisor should be 396 for the "e" chip. (2400, N,8,1 true
    data).

The word table starts at zero not one in case that may be the problem.

See if any of this helps, if not come back and lets us know.

    Mike B.
