Hi,
Here is a site that has some useful info, with one of these chips and a few
mosfet transistors you could do exactly what you want.

This article has some good info on brushless DC motors.

Looks like you will either have to use one of these chips, or create a home
brew of discrete parts. I would say your best bet is to use a chip. You might
also try the electronics.basic newsgroup and see if anyone there has any
ideas on brushless controller design.
