Clock Signal...

Hello All,

Can a clock signal drive more than one digital(TTL) I.C.? If so,
how many I.C.'s can I drive, before I have to worry about "loading" the
clock signal down? This is a BS2 project, but I admit that the question is
slightly off-topic.

Thanks,

Tim

P.S. Martin, the Stamps In Class Industrial Control text was just what I
needed. Thank you for pointing me in that direction.

This depends on a few factors such as speed, what your output driver is
capable of, and the overall distance from the clock source.

The common pratice if you are worried about loading is to use a buffer like
a 7404 or similar. If you need to "fan out" to a LOT of chips you can
parallel the inputs to the 7404 (6 in a package) then you can drive many,
    many loads like that.

    Thanks Beau and Mike,

To answer your questions Beau, the clock signals are slow in this
application - less than 100Hz, the clock is capable of supplying at least
50mA, and the longest distance needed from the source is only 4 inches or
so. I'd like to use this signal as clock input to three or four other
basic digital I.C.'s. Mike, I so appreciate that you included part numbers
for a "fan-out" configuration. I'll add this to my education archives.

    Tim
