Serial programing cable

My project requires that my BS2P40 be mounted inside a cabinet. I
would like to permanently wire the serial programming pins (1-4) to
an external serial plug that I can plug into to program the BS2P40,
without opening the cabinet to connect the programming cable. I have
the external plug and everything works fine as long as the PC is
attached through the external serial plug. But when I disconnect the
serial cable, my LCD display becomes scrambled. Do I need to
terminate the connections in the serial plug someway when it is not
connected to the computer? Does anyone have any suggestions as to
what is happening?
