connecting the basic stamp 2 -sx to the polaroid 6500

Hi,
Has anyone here successfully interface the polaroid 6500 sensor
with instrument grade transducer to the basic stamp 2 ?
I'd like to know if its indeed possible for VDD(+5V) on the stamp
to power the sensor as mentioned in the link below? This seems
rather strange to me as the stamp's onboard regulator can only provide
50ma and the sensor needs 2A whenever it has to make a ping.
The design in the file below uses a capacitor, could that have
anything to do with this ?
I'm aware Acroname has a different design for interfacing, but the
one below is simpler.

Thanks for any help,
Jim

Careful! I blew out an I/O line trying to run one of those things. I
don't know what I did wrong, but It'll be a while before I try again.

They have code samples to run them with a Basic Stamp there.
