When placing a diode to protect a relay, does the cathode connect to
the positive or negative side?

When you protect a relay with a diode, it always faces opposite the
applied voltage. For example, the cathode band will face the
positive voltage and the anode band will face the negative voltage.
If you have an unlimited current supply and the diode is wrong, you
will know it because it will smoke and possibly explode.
