Does anyone know of a low-cost (or free) circuit diagramming
software? Also, a low-cost circuit board etching software? Thanks.

There are a few sites on the web that take your dsign files
and generate a quick turn PCB. Some also supply the needed
    software. For example, check out:

    http://www.expresspcb.com/

They offer design software which can then feed your layout
to them for manufacturing. This is a bit of a "captive
marketing" approach, but they do both design and board
layout and their boards are cheap.

If these guys don't excit, do a google search as there are
    others with similar offerings...

    Scott,
Similar to expresspcb, I use pcb123. The schematic and layout
software is free. Basically, just design your circuit with their
schematic application and then the layout application will place the
components on your board and you can perform an autoroute and it will
layout the traces. Then you upload the layout files to them and they
will manufacture your boards and send them to you. One of the coolest
items is their layout software continually updates the price of your
board as you go along. I think their prices are pretty reasonable. My
first project took me a weekend to learn their software through
designing my custom parts, creating my schematic, performing the
layout, move my parts around the board and finish the project. I
ordered my boards from them Monday morning and they were shipped out
to me that same afternoon. Check them out at www.pcb123.com.

    Try www.expresspcb.com for free program.

There is no such thing as "etching" software. There is routing and machining
software, but that is a different story.

    Hi Scott,

I use the Eagle free edition, which has some limitations :

    ********************************************************
The following limitations apply to the EAGLE Light Edition in general:

The useable board area is limited to 100 x 80 mm (4 x 3.2 inches).
Only two signal layers can be used (Top and Bottom).
The schematic editor can only create one sheet.

Apart from these three limitiations the EAGLE Light Edition can do
anything the Professional Edition can do. You can even load, view and
print drawings that exceed these limits!

The Freeware version of EAGLE Light adds these limitations:
Support is only available via email or through our forum (no fax or
    phone support).
Use is limited to non-profit applications or evaluation purposes.
    *********************************************************

It's a fully functionnal software, for schematic capture and pcb
design, with autorouting and *many* libraries.
    Have a look on www.cadsoft.de

    Phil.

    Hey,
I'm looking for a circuit diagramming software that will import an OrCAD
design and lay it out on a PCB board for me. I don't need the company to
manufacture it for me...I enjoy doing it the old-fashion way with etchant.
    Thanks.

    Hi Scott,
I've been looking for the same thing, and I found TRAXMAKER trial,
but its limitation is you can't creat components, but other wize its a

    Scott;

I use a program called Electronic Workbench from Interactive Image Technologies.

    http://www.interactiv.com/

I use it for electronic circuit simulation. I have used versions of it for
about 10 years and it works amazingly
well. It is a little pricey costing hundreds of dollars. I know they do offer
a program that will do a circuit
board layout from a schematic diagram. I suspect it might be pricey as well. I
don't know what you mean by
low-cost. Anyway you might give them a look.

    Good luck,

    Jim

    Scott,
I also use Multisim and Ultiboard, if by chance you are a student you can get a
pretty good deal on it. I think it costed me 100 dollars for each program. Even
the standard hobby edition is only 299 or so which by itself is expensive but
compared to other eda's like protel dxp $8000 or orCAD $14,000 or any other
proffessional eda that can do an equivalent spice 3f5 mixed signal simulation is
    pretty darn cheap!

    Go to http://www.ivex.com/

You can use ivex windraft to draw a schematic and then you export
it into a netlist and use winboard to design your circuit board. I
have found you can get lower pin versions from local supply
houses(lower price) The software manufacturer seems to have
been around for quite awhile. Their technical support from my
    experience is quite good also.

Expresspcb.com used to have a free download of their design
software. You can't get rid of the dots on the printout though.

In my opinion Ivex sucks!!!! It is always freezes with Windows 2000, IVEX PCB
doesn't even work on the WINXP platform. If it happens to freeze while you are
saving your work so don't expect to open the file as it will be corrupted. IVEX
PCB can not autoroute either. I would stick with eagle for schematic capture and
pcb layout and camtastic for post processing.

I've found WinBoard (Ivex) to be robust and reliable on Windows 2000.
Earlier program freezes on Win 95 and 98 were usually due to bad
techniques on my part using netlists and ground planes. When that
happened, Ivex tech support responded promptly, sometimes requesting my
board file by email to recover it. Sure, WinBoard has limitations, but
so does most software, so evaluating tech support response should be
    part of the equation.

FWIW, I first learned programming on a Univac I, a vacuum tube machine.
At any given time, about 200 tubes would blow, so my program never
produced the same results twice in a row. I'm therefore more tolerant
than most of software bugs, except my own of course.
