7-segment serial driver

Hi Folks,

I want to build a display of at least 4 digits for which I want to use
7-segment LEDs. To save pins on my Stamp I would like to use some kind of
serial-to-7-segment-converter, if possible one that can handle four digits.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Uli

Take a look at the Maxim MAX7219

There is the Max IC, or, if you want to build up a module that doesn't
require too many lines, have a look at my 5 digit design which uses a 4094
with each display. The data sheet has a circuit diagram, and software
    samples for the stamp.

    url is http://www.lennard.net.nz/electronics/led.html

This is for a 5 digit display. For a 4 digit display, just remove one of
    the modules.

    cheers,

    Ben, Wellington, New Zealand.

    Hi Johan,

This module is based on the Hitachi Chipset, so there are at least 3 places
    you can get info:

My site: http://www.lennard.net.nz/electronics/lcd.html (I've changed the
code recently - optimised it, but the examples do work and will get you
    started).
Or, this site (which is where I went to get the ideas on my site to work):
    http://home.iae.nl/users/pouweha/lcd/lcd0.shtml
Or Jon William's Nuts and Volts article (can't remember the url, but Jon
could point you in the right direction).

    Cheers,

    Ben.

    Hi Uli,

The attached code works for the setup in the attached jpeg of the BOE wired
for 4 digits. The max7219.bs2 is modified to just drive the simple 4 digits.
The LEDSonar2.bs2 is for the complete BOE setup pictured in my jpeg. Both
work well. I had trouble with the actual code I downloaded from the Parallax
site so I adjusted it and it works now.

    Tom
