newbie needs help stamp 1 general programming hookup

I am trying to connect up a STAMP 1. I have cut my own cable using the
diagram. the pins test through ok. I hook up the unit and run the dos
software, and it said "ERROR * Hardware no found". any clues?
on the stamp
pin 1 to + 9v
pin 2 to - 9v and pin 25 on parallel port.
pin 3 to pin 11 on the parallel port.
pin 4 to pin 2 on the parallel port.
