driving a 24V solenoid with the ULN2003

Ignorant questions...I want to send 24V to a solenoid I'm controlling
with the BS2. Have never used the ULN2003 before.

1) Power Source: The application will run out-of-doors for an
extended period of time. Any suggestions re. power source?

2) ULN2003 I/O configuration: Let's assume I'm sending my input
signal through P4 of the BS2. I'll connect P4 to 1B (Pin1) of the
ULN2003. Do I connect 1C (Pin16) of the ULN2004 to the solenoid.

3) ULN2004 Power configuration: Positive terminal of power source to
COM (Pin 9) of ULN2003; negative terminal of power source to E (Pin
8) of ULN2003.

4) Solenoid Configuration: 1C of ULN2003 to positive terminal; common
ground to negative terminal.

Am I close?

Thanks!

I have never used that device before either, but just
from looking at the data sheet I might think that a
24v coil would pull more than 500ma. That's not much
for a relay or solinoid, IMO.

I have been looking at the K3010P (Mouser) triac,
which looks like it can pull down 3 amps. I have
bought several of these and was planning on driving
them with a 2n2222A but haven't had time to hook them
up to their own power supplies and test off-line from
the stamp.

Let me know what you think . . .

A good example with explanations for use of stamps and ULN2003 is Note
6: A Serial Stepper Controller in the BS1 stamp notes on the Parallax
website. Note that the ULN2003 will drive up to 500 mA in each of its 7
Darlington channels. I suspect that you can parallel 2 or more channels
for higher current capacity, but I could be wrong about that. See
answers below.

Subject: [basicstamps] driving a 24V solenoid with the ULN2003

Ignorant questions...I want to send 24V to a solenoid I'm controlling
with the BS2. Have never used the ULN2003 before.

1) Power Source: The application will run out-of-doors for an
extended period of time. Any suggestions re. power source?

Any with enough current capacity in a weather-proof enclosure.

2) ULN2003 I/O configuration: Let's assume I'm sending my input
signal through P4 of the BS2. I'll connect P4 to 1B (Pin1) of the
ULN2003.

That is correct.

Do I connect 1C (Pin16) of the ULN2004 to the solenoid.

Yes, to the solenoid Common, or negative terminal. Also, connect a 1K
ohm resistor (1/2 watt) from Pin 16 to +5v. (See Stamp Note 6.)

3) ULN2004 Power configuration: Positive terminal of power source to
COM (Pin 9) of ULN2003;

Definitely not. You will blow out the 2003.

negative terminal of power source to E (Pin
8) of ULN2003.

Yes. Also, connect Pin 8 to the Stamp ground.

4) Solenoid Configuration: 1C of ULN2003 to positive terminal;

No.

common
ground to negative terminal.

No. See below.

A brief summary:
Connect the power source positive terminal to the positive terminal of
the solenoid. Connect the negative terminal of the solenoid to ULN2003
Pin 16. When the Stamp pin signal to ULN2003 (Pin 1) goes high, the
output goes low, driving the solenoid negative terminal to ground. This
activates the solenoid. Again, watch the current limit of 500 mA.
