White LED''s

The post a couple of days ago got me thinking about white LED's. I'm not
sure if a stamp is REQUIRED for this project, but I would include one just
for fun I'm sure. Here's my project and question(s):
We have a remote cabin in the north country, and use 12 volt lighting
(batteries drain fast) Could I replace the 12v light bulbs with very bright
LED's? Thus reducing power consumption and increasing longevity of the
light source. I could pretty easily then implement a stamp to control these
lights (I could now, I know, but LEDs are cooler)
1) What size LED's should I be looking for to replace say a 60 watt light
bulb?
2) How do I get a LED into a light socket footprint?
3) What obvious detail have I overlooked? (Is this reasonable?)
As always, thanks in advance.
