Lumileds, a division of Agilent which should be spun
off in the near future, manufactures LED's in Santa
Clara, CA, USA. They sell under the Luxeon name (see
Luxeon.com for products). (Not that there's anything
wrong with making things in Japan, another advanced
economy with a high degree of skilled labor.)

While there is not too much to vary in fabricating
component LED's - the ingredients are more or less set
in stone, although relative purity is always key - I
can tell you that Lumileds is using some innovative
equipment for some of its processes. And that they
have a neat cafeteria. [noparse]:)[/noparse]

Also, as too brightness, they have products that
replace the hundreds of LED's you see in some traffic
lights with no more than a couple dozen.
