Building network microphone and speaker module

Hi,
I am interested in building a module which can send and receive audio data over
an ethernet. I wish to have speaker output and microphone input. I'm guessing I
would need the Basic stamp with an Embedded Ethernet Board for the network
interface, and some sort of DSP and audio input/output module (am i talking
rubbish here?) for the audio input/processing.
I am trying to keep costs down (obviously). Could anybody tell me whether
1) this is feasible at all
2) perhaps some product does this already
3) what components i would use for construction of this module?
