Greetings!

I think CompactFlash or Smartmedia cards would be a bit 'over the top' when
considering what a BS can hnadle.

The Basic tiger from Wilke Technology is supposedly able to use them, but I
belive they're somewhat more expensive.
(see www.basictiger.com)

You don't mention anything about how much data you're thinking about...

For example, the DS1996 iButton from Dallas Semiconductors (www.ibutton.com)
have 8KB Non.volatile RAM. (The necessary 1-Wire comands are built-in in the
2p24 and 2p40)
The iButtons are relatively cheap, have a guaranteed 10 year life, are
encased in stainless steel and short circuit proof... (Dropping them in a
pond won't hurt them either :-)

Need more room than that?
Take a quick look at this:
http://home.c2i.net/trygveh/english/gadgetman/pocket/psion/org1pak.html

It's the DataPak from an early (1984) Organiser that stored all data on
EPROM's.
It uses a serial algrithm to 'clock it's way' to the wanted data.
(Should work OK when writing since you'll probably be working your way
sequentially through the data space anyhow)
There's no reason that this shouldn't work with any EPROM/EEPROM/NV-RAM or
whatever.
(I belive DalSemi have some 256KB NV-RAM's :-)

:-)

Just back from a 4 week vacation, and facing a HUGE backlog of mails...

I trying to develop a remote data collection application. It is not
practical to trasport a laptop to the location to download data. I'm
thinking of installing a CompacFlash or SmartMedia cards to record
data then swaping it out from time to time. Has anyone had any
experience trying to interface on of these cards for memory storage
on a stamp or PIC device.

My goal would be to swap out the memory card, do a reset and let it
start recording from the beginning.
