What is a good way to drive higher current LED displays with the
Max7219. By higher I mean making each display
segment out of 8 individual LED's. Overall display
is about 8 inch tall with 56 LED's.

Something like this:

OOOOOOOO
O O
O O
O O
O O
O O
O O
O O
OOOOOOOO
O O
O O
O O
O O
O O
O O
O O
OOOOOOOO

I implemented a max7219 with 5 LED's per segment by simply using the MAX7219 to
drive a high current op amp for each segment.

    Jay,

Thanks for the idea, could you tell me the details.
I almost know how a transitor works, but I would
rate my electronic knowledge as novice.

Why do you need a higher current
I think you need a higher voltage
Connect the leds per segment in serie ( as done in bigger displays)
and connet like in the datasheet of the MAX7219

    http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm?qv_pk=1339

all you need is a MAX394

Check out the free sample section.

I will give you a schematic. Email off this list : jmanning@e... and I
will let you know what to do..
send me the info on the forward voltage of each LED. or just give me a part
number and manufacturer and I will let you know what to do.
    Thanks,
    J.
