Relay feedback

Hey everyone,

I am looking for the correct term and defintion. It's happens when a
relay is turned off and the collapsing magentic field produces a
voltage that can hurt electronics componenets. We commonly use a
diode to suppress it. Can anyone help me out the the term and
defintion? Thanks, Chris

    Hello Chris,
Flyback voltage is probably a good a term for it. There is an entire class
of switching power supplies that use this inductive voltage transient to
step-up voltage; they are called "flyback supplies".

I'd call it "induced EMF" - caused by the rapid collapse of the magnetic
field around an inductor. the field is created by current flow and the
rapid collapse is caused by sudden cessation of current flow.

Probably not as succinct as it could be, but that's the idea.

The term I use is "back EMF".

What is an inductive spike? Is this what you are looking for?
