Steam noise??

Circuits to generate steam engine noise, as in model trains, or in my
case, an electrically driven model steam tugboat, seem to rely on
reverse breakdown "white" noise from zeners or transistors, which can
be turned on and off to simulate the chuffing of a steam engine.
I've tried a few different circuits, but have difficulty generating
the noise in the first place, or find it is so small that the
amplification needed also brings up unacceptable line noise and/or
ringing.
Anyone know of sure-fire circuits to make steam engine noise, or
simply white noise? I'd like not to just buy a commercial unit (I'd
rather spend more $ and time doing it myself!).
