capacitance substitution

Hi:
I was wondering if anyone knew where i could find any general rules of thumb on
substituting capacitor types. I am putting together a project and sometimes the
project calls for an electrolytic while other times it calls for a radial film.
While I was ordering parts i noticed that electrolytics of the same value as
radial films are about half the price. This adds up when you have ten or so
parts like this. While looking through the digikey catalog I noticed they have
about 50 different capacitor types and I know some of these have got to be
repleacable with other types. Can someome please help me out?
Thanks!
