SV: [basicstamps] knowledge extraction

Greetings!

Most of the differences is power and speed...
The original 7400 series is the slowest, then the 'S' series is faster, but
uses more power.
The 'LS' series is 'Low power Schottky'(the type of transistors used) and
retains the speed of the 'S' series but draws less power..
The 'C' series are CMOS based,(I think) so draws little power but are slow.
The 'HC' is 'High Speed', and are faster. The same goes for 'HCT'
I usually stick to HCT or HC circuits if available, and speed isn't an
issue. (It usually isn't unless you're working at very high speeds)

The 4000 series are CMOS, and don't really operate at ordinary TTL levels,
but if they're fed +5V, they're close enough. I really don't recommend
mixing the types unless necessary.
They CAN operate at other power levels than +5V though, so may be better
suited to some applications.

One problem you may have to look out for is Fanin/Fanout problems.
This is power related, and varies from case to case. (Look at the sink
capabilities of the outputs of a circuit, and compare with the drain of the
inputs that are connected to it)
Usually this isn't a problem with less than 10 inputs connected to an
output.

:-)

Hi Stampers
Does anyone know a good source to help explain the advantages, disadvantages
and compatabilites of the different logic families that are out there.
First it was the 7400 series then C, LS, S, HC, HCT, and the CD 4000 series.
Most of these have IC's that perform the exact function but in different
families.

A few weeks back reference was made to some book that I saw several of you
recommend. I was thinking of ordering it but I lost the name of this book.
Would this book cover this type information? I asked TI on their web site if
they had any info on the different families but haven't received a reply in
over 1 month.

Thanks and Happy Fathers day to all that qualify
Eric Adams
