Measurement of AC current

Hi there
I am using an AC transformer on an AC mains (240Vac) line. I receive
an AC current of between 0-1Amps. How can I measure this current
unsing a Basic Stamp. Do i need to convert this current to a DC
voltage first?? If so, how do i do this?
