direction control of automated cart

I am using a BS2 to control an automated cart. It needs to
travel up and down and a walkway indoors and out. I started to use a
line follower but I think that the walk is to rough and the ambient
light to great as well as the possibility of dirt ect. on the line.
There seems to be a general consenses that following a wire that
transmits a signal is probably the route that I should take. How do I
set that up?
