How Do I Build A Switching System?

ArchiverArchiver Posts: 46,084
edited 2002-06-07 15:59 in General Discussion
i would like to build a switching system that will turn on and off 16
car radios, 16 amplifiers, 16 front spekers, 16 rear speakers and 16
sub woofers. i am building a car audio display and would also like to
build my own switching system.

i would also like to control all of the switching from a IR receiver
and transmiter using a sony universal remote.

i need to know what products will be needed as well as a wiring
diagram of how to assemble the stamps and the programing instructions.

this is a real important project to me andi would greatley appriciate
some good help.

i currentley have in my possesion the board of education stamp kit.

i can provide more information if someone has more questions.

thanks in advance

todd.

I don't think a stamp alone would be capable of such a task. Two
options I can think of are 3 - 16 position dual contact rotary
switches. This in itself would probably work. Or you could use 3
groups of 16 sets of DPDT relays controlled by the stamp which would
look neater and probably be more expensive. I say DPDT because you would
probably have to switch the common connection, even though it is
common. If you know car audio systems, you probably know what I mean.
Also every K-mart & Walmart has one along with Circuit City. Maybe you
could ask a question there as well. I think it would be fun to design
such a thing. Hope this is a start anyway..

    Hi Todd,

Are you looking to switch any radio with an speaker and any amp ?

Once you do the schematic, you may find that simple relays may be the
cheapest and simplest way to do your switching.

but 4 sets of 16 units (64 total units) will require quite an
    elaborate set-up.

if you are just switching things on and off for a showroom style
display, can all the speakers share a common ground with just the
    positive lead being switched ?

It seems that the Stamp would be needed only to accept the IR and
    then signal the relays.

    Todd:
The problem you are trying to solve isn't very hard the main problem is funds. I
take it from your email name and your question you are trying to set up some
sort of a display. What types of power levels are you talking about as far as
your amplifiers are concerned? Since these are car radios and I am assuming car
amplifiers you can utilize the 'remote' (blue wire) to turn them on and off. By
doing this you could set up a multiplexer system using either b.c.d. or SPI. and
32 relays could be eliminated right away. As far as the speakers are concerned
you would need to have some sort of a switching matrix... I am assuming you are
trying to set up a 'best buy' display system. Am I correct?

Try a search on "crosspoint switches". These do a neat "any-to-any" signal
connection and can easily be controlled by a Stamp. They are typically
used in video systems and you "might" be able to pick up a freebie. I have
no idea about the power/frequency specs, but it might be something to check
    on.

As for the bushel of relays option, there are many related messages in the
    archives.

    Good luck.

I take it from your email name and your question you are trying to set up some
sort of a display.

How would you do this ? are car radio's controlled via serial
connection to the car's main CPU ? would GM radios all have the same
serial address so they would be interchangeable ? afterall not many
    cars have two radios.

here is a schematic for a nice unit, u can add any input device you need, id
will handle 4 groups of 16 devices each group and there is 8 more data pins
left on the stamp for your use.

    norm

see attachment schematic, others who dont see the schematic and want it send
me your private email address and ill send directly, as the stamp list
    blocks attachments.

The blue wire is simply a switch to turn the amplifier on. When you put 12
volts on this wire it turns on a big transistor and the amp comes on. When
you turn your key off it cuts power to this wire and turns the amp off.
This way your main power wire which usually goes straight to the battery and
carries 20 or 30 amps doesn't have to be switched externally its all done
    with the little blue wire.
