Problems with the L298 Motor Driver Kit ?

I was looking for solutions to drive 2 DC motors that can be
controlled with a basic stamp 2. I bought 2 - L298 Motor Driver Kit
from HWV. It is working fine for 1 or 2 hours(i am controlling little
robots with to wheels) and then the chip burns... My 12vdc motors do
not run for more then 1 Amp...

I tried many things it always end the same way !!

Do anyone had the same problem? any solutions or tips?

Do anyone have another solutions (with explicit diagrams!) to drive
two DC motors with a basic stamp? I need something that can handle
runing for 6 to 8 hours continuously going back and forth...

Artist stuff !!! :)

Merci

When driving inductive loads clamping diodes at the outputs of the LM298
are a good idea (are necessary!) to prevent spikes from destroying the chip.

Do a Google search for LM298 and you'll find a spec sheet with schematics.

If that isn't the solution, I have no idea.

They probably only draw 1 amp when unloaded but if your robot gets stuck
and the wheel is held in place (i.e. "stalled") then it will draw MUCH more
(possibly 4 amps or more) which can destroy the chip. When selecting a
motor driver, you must know all the parameters of the motor in question -
particularly the stall current (you can find this by measuring the DC
resistance of the motor winding and dividing the battery voltage by this
resistance to get current in amps).

Assuming that your motors don't draw too much current, then the L298 kit is
exactly what you need. If you will be running it for long periods then you
should consult the manual section on adding a heatsink to the L298.

sounds like the loaded motor current is to high, ive been using the 298's
for several years without a single failure, and i was wired exactly as the
    schematics showed.

Add some big heat sinks. Makes a huge difference.
