At Parallax we tend to use the Garmin eTrex family (handheld) for our
experiments. The cables are expensive, but we've found some decent 3rd party
sources.

GPS recievers output serial data in the NMEA format. This is at
4800 buad, N81. There are several "legal" NMEA sentences,
including GPGGA and GPRMC which are the most popular.

Pfranc makes some inexpensive Garmin cables.

I am sending this again because I think my email system was
    messed up this morning.

I keep reading about GPS modules that some people are using. Is
this the same as a hand held unit or is it a specialty device with
just a serial output. Can someone give me a link to some
information or straiten out my confusion.

    Thanks
    Mark

Thanks for the help with the GPS module. I will take a look and

Most companys make OEM GPS modules. You supply the case,RS232 drivers
and antenna. They are usually more expensive than consumer units
    though. These are about the lowest cost ones I've seen;

Dear replier ( name not shown)
Just FYI. the units laipac is selling in Canada are "old" modules mfg in
Taipei a long time ago. The SIRF I chip set has been around for a long time
and was replaced about 3 years ago with the SIRF II chipset and sometime
this year (?) they will have a low power version SIRF LP. The problem for
portable apps with this chip set is that they draw around 150mA at
continuous mode and the others that are about the same price OEM's, draw
around 30-40 mA which is considerable for battery life. I have an
assortment of all of these OEM's for my eng and they all have a low level
RS232 signal TXD and RXD, but just add the MAX 3232 chip and it puts out the
right levels. Small active patch antennas are widely available and most are
"good" receivers, but remember GPS is as good as GPS gets. You need good
visibility on the low angles of the horizon to get "good" fixes most of the
    time. good luck

The eTrex cables are ridiculously expensive will you pass on your 3rd party
