Looking for Don...

I have been having trouble programming my BS2 with my new computer.
Don, you helped me out somewhat but I didn't give you accurate
information. I was hoping that we could start all over and I'll tell
you what my specs are and we can figure out a solution. Right now I
need to program more than ever.
(in case anyone is reading) I have a BS2 on a Super Carrier Board. I
have perfectly good 9V batteries connected to it. I have a 9-pin
connector cord, but my computer does not have that type of plug-in.
Instead, I have a parallel port, a 15-pin port, and two USB ports. I
bought a 9-pin to parallel port adaptor, but it doesn't seem to help.
I'm running WinXP and using the windows version of BS2 programming.
When I try to run a program or ID the BS2, it says that it detects
the BS2, but it's not responding. It also tells me to check the
battery, which I do not believe is the problem (I've run several
batteries). If there is anymore info you need, please tell me. Of
course, if no one answers this, I'm up the creek without a
paddle...any and all help is appreciated.

Ok, I think I see the problem. If you only have a parallel port
(connector on the computer has only holes, not pins) then you are probably
out of luck with that computer. The BS2 is designed to be programmed ONLY
through a SERIAL port (connector on the computer has 9 or 25 pins, not
holes). Only the BS1 can be programmed through a parallel port.
I don't really know why you would get any kind of response from the
parallel port ("When I try to run a program or ID the BS2, it says that it
detects the BS2, but it's not responding...") because the editor is
supposed to only poll the serial ports. I can't imagine why your computer
would have only a parallel port and no serial port at all, but from what you
describe, that seems to be the case. The 15 pin port is usually for hooking
up joy sticks. If it is a serial port or some kind of shared port, I
wouldn't know how to handle interfacing with that connector.
Basically, I don't know what to tell you at this point, assuming I am
reading your email correctly. Do you have access to any other PC. Even an
old slow one could program the BS2 quite easily. Let me know if I am
    missing anything.

The only other thing that comes to me is you might investigate working
through the USB port via some kind of USB-to-serial conversion process, if
that is even possible. Something like that is better asked of Parallax or
one of the more experienced people on the Group.
    Good Luck!

I am using a usb to serial I got from best buy and it works quite well.
Doesn't even require a power adapter. Its made by belkin.

Now I'm curious! How do you tell the Stamp editor to use the USB port?
I have little USB experience because my machines have serial ports and I
haven't needed any USB-only devices, though I do have four USB ports on one
    machine.

Actually it just creates another serial port when you install the adapter.
Editor finds the available port at your up and running.

Hmm, cool. So it makes the USB a COM port. I'll keep this in mind.
You never know what kind of difficulties may arise when computing or
    stamping.
Thanks for the info, and I'm really hoping this will help astro_fizzix. He
has been dealing with this problem for weeks.

There are quite a few of these to choose from. I saw one that you plugged
into a usb port and expanded to 4 usb, one nine pin serial, a keyboard, a
mouse, and a port that would read the memory cards from some cameras. This
one is at circuit city. But it had windows xp driver problems. May have it
    fixed now though.

None of your ports are suitable for directly programming the BS2, which
needs to be programmed via a serial port. I think you were told this very
    clearly quite some time ago.

I suggest you use another computer with a serial port, or else get a
USB-to-serial adapter. Belkin is one manufacturer of USB-to-serial
adapters that we know work for programming the BS2. When you install the
adapter driver, it will create a virtual serial port that should be found
by your Stamp programming software. Pay attention during this process and
make note of what port number is created in case you have to enter that
value manually into the Stamp programming software.

You also mentioned you have a BS1. If it will run the program you need to
write, you could switch your Supper Carrier Board over to program a BS1 via
    the parallel port.

Whatever you do, you need to look at your Super Carrier Board documentation
and be sure it is set up appropriately to either program a BS2 via a serial
port, or to program a BS1 via a parallel port.

Hi, I had the same problem I coud not ran the BS2 from windows, so i tried in
DOS and it worked (buy the new windows does not have DOS!).
About the conection, you should try to buy a USB to serial adapter, unfortunaly,
these adaptors are a little expensive, but it is better than nothing.

I solved the same problem using a USB to Serial Adaptor made by
Keyspan (#USA-19QW) (www/keyspan.com) and purchased from
    MicroWarehouse (#DAD1856) ($49.99) (www.warehouse.com)

    Hi,

I use a Keyspan USA-19QW USB High Speed Serial Adapter on all my boards and
it works great. I have had it for
about a month now and use it all the time. This adapter runs about $40.00 to
$60.00 here in the USA, so shop
around for the best price. I have tried other brands, but this is the only one
I have found to work all the time.

    Having Fun !!

Well I am certainly going to find a serial-USB adaptor and try it
with my program! It will take me a little time to get it (location),
but if it works it's worth it!

As for Jim Higgins, I remember them telling me about the serial thing
a while back, but you must know that I am a beginner and am not
knowledgable in electronics. Please cut me some slack! It takes me a
while to get things into my head...

Thanks for the help guys! Cross your fingers.

Fair enough. I'm sorry I hollered at you to get your attention. It seemed
the thing to do at the time since you asked the same question several times
and didn't seem to be listening to the answers, all the while mentioning
your approaching deadline and how screwed you were going to be.

    Good luck!
