nead help with dtmf

hello,
I'm trying to hook up a phone to my cm8880 app kit to test the dtmf recever.
i put a fresh 9v battery across the ring and tip of a couple of diffrent
phones like the app kit said to do however i was unable to get them to
generate any tones. they work when i hook them up to a live phone line. any
ideas?
