them the "F" types "flash" and a few 4 and 20 mhz resonators, get the three
lead type, they have built in caps, it makes wiring easier and more
reliable.
the above with your already existing parts-
leds, relays, caps, diodes, transistors, resistors, inductors, etc and your in the
ball park to start making pretty neat things.
nerds DO have more fun.

You have quite a few options for getting started with the PIC.
BASIC:
Have a look at our PicBasic project pages for an idea of what it's like using
the PicBasic compiler.http://www.rentron.com/PicBasic1.htm
Assembly:
Check out Myke Predkos PIC projects: http://www.rentron.com/pic.htm
Visit Microchips web site for datasheets & application notes:
http://www.microchip.com
Browse through the PICList: http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist/index.htm
Peter Anderson's PIC Page http://www.phanderson.com/PIC/
C:
We have a beginners course for programming the PIC in "C" complete with C
compiler,
and PIC development board http://www.rentron.com/C2C.htm
Commercial C compilers:
CCS C compiler http://www.ccsinfo.com/ccscorder.html
HI-TECH C compiler http://www.htsoft.com/
That should be enough to keep you busy for a while.
