In response to fingerprint scanners...

I've noticed a lot of these available on Ebay, typically finalizing in the
$50.00 range. "UareU" seems to be one of the best known names. Most of
them appear to use the parallel port WITHOUT a pass-through, and quite a
few have OS restrictions. All of the software seems to be a Windows-based
"wedge" that waits for recognized software patterns ("I need a password
here"-type), requests your finger, and then compares the read with a
pre-trained database. If there is a match, the software slips in your
password (also pre-trained) and away you go. The scanner itself appears to
only do the scan of the print and passes out a string representing the
print...the software does the "analysis" and matching, based on (usually)
six "identifiers" (fingerprint analysis is an interesting topic unto
itself). This is all informed speculation on my part.

In short, while you might be able to interface the Stamp to the scanner, I
don't know what you could do with the data it feeds you. Perhaps with an
eeprom to hold a known pattern (I have no idea how much data that is) and a
knowledge of the analysis algorithm... Kinda reminds me of the early days
of "voice command" for home machines (yes, even the '64 could do it)...
