MP3 player interfacing

I want to control some sort of portable and small audio player and
recorder system with my BS2. I've looked at the Quadravox products but
they seem either too costly(MP3 modules) or the sampling rate is too
low(I need at least 22kHz). So I was thinking maybe I could interface
a commercial MP3 player. A 16MB version would have enough space for
my application and would also be of high enough sound quality. I could
go the ugly manual route and pull the buttons off the player and
interface them directly, or perhaps use an infrared interface for a
player with a remote. However I'd much rather iterface electronically,
possibly through the USB port. I'd also like quick random access to
each track.

Does anyone know of anyone who has done this before, or where I could
find details of the communications protocols for specific players? Or
are there any other products which would suit my needs?

thanks,

Paul Lugger
