compiler for any platform -- STRAIGHT INFO FROM PARALLAX

There has been a misunderstanding here that requires clarification.

(1) We are porting our compiler (currently written in 80x86 assembly
language) to C/C++. Our goal is to help developers of all operating systems
create Stamp tools for their favorite OS. This project is near completion,
in fact, we have been testing the high level compiler (versus the linked
assembly language version) for over a month. It seems to be working well.

(2) We haven't decided how we will release this -- and it certainly won't be
in the next two to three weeks. The [business] problem for us is that
releasing the compiler source will expose Parallax trade secrets and that is
something we're not willing to do. The more likely path is that we will
precompile this code for various operating systems so that it can be linked
into IDE's and development tools created by independent developers.

I'm sure there will be a lot of groaning over the latter part of item #2,
especially from those who enjoy "open source" projects. Please understand
our position. We've sold over 2.5 million BASIC Stamps and have a top notch
service group to take care of those customers. If we released our compiler
source, it could be modified by someone not qualified to do so and create a
service nightmare for us and customers who have paid good money for their
BASIC Stamp.

By providing precompiled code, we can be sure that it's working and make
updates available for everyone using any OS.

I was under the impression that Parallax was pro education but maybe
I was wrong. My posting was not to obtain any source code but was
simply to ask Parallax to create an IDE for alternate operating
systems such as Palm and Win CE. With the engineers Parallax
employs, I assumed it would not be a complicated task. I apologize
for any misunderstanding that I may have created. If porting you IDE
to another OS is that complicated, our (La) educational system will
    have to look elsewhere.
    Thanks,
    Curtis Desselles

If any company supports education, it is Parallax. As I write this, my boss
is packing for a trip to Indiana to spend two days working with educators and
    BASIC Stamps.

In our Engineering meeting today, we discussed this subject. You're right,
it's not that difficult, it's just that business currently requires our
engineering efforts to be directed elsewhere (projects that fund the stuff we
give away -- like the IDE).

That said, we have a new guy onboard who does Palm development and he will
get involved as we continue to move forward. We will also look for
development partners that we can work with since we do Windows development
reasonably well, but only have one Mac in house (for our graphics designer)
no LINUX boxes, and no development tools for either.

So ... we ARE pro-education and we ARE working toward making Stamp tools
available on other operating systems. It won't happen next week though, in
fact, in may be six or more months away.

I hope that Parallax will consider a IDE for Mac OS X.
