The BS1 and Windows XP

I have tried to program my BS1 on computers with windows XP and it
won't work. It can be programed on my old WIN98 comp, but for some
reason it keeps saying "hardware not found" on XP. I have tried many
good batteries, and my BS1 works fine. Anyone know the problem?

check my com ports. Where do I go and what should they look like?
(It's for the BS1) Also, I don't have a 9-pin connector on my cp, and
I was thinking of buying a 9-pin to USB cord. Could I use my BS2 with
that? Please get back with me on this because I am right in the
middle of a robotics project at my Technical School and I'm in a
hurry! Thanks for the info!

I use a Keyspan high speed USB serial adapter (USA19QW) and it works great.
Cost about $50.00 to $60.00, hope
this helps.
Have Fun !!

He says he has a BS1 - it needs a parallel port.

I'm confused. Do you need to program a BS1 or a BS2? Or do you have
both? Big difference.
The BS1 connects to your computer's parallel port and programs using a DOS
program. If it's even possible to access the parallel port on a WinXP
system using DOS software, I suggest it will be so much trouble to make it
work reliably (if at all) that your best bet is to use another computer
running just plain DOS if you really have to program a BS1. It may run on
a Win9x system, but forget WinXP. WinXP doesn't allow access to hardware
by DOS programs. If there are any workarounds I don't know them and you
sound like you don't have time to burn playing with them. Find a DOS
machine if you have to program a BS1.
The BS2 connects to one of your computer's serial ports and programs using
DOS or Windows software. If you have a BS2, I strongly suggest you use the
Windows programming software to avoid similar problems with accessing
hardware ports under WinXP. Alternatively, use the DOS software and find a
DOS machine.
Software for programming either of these Stamps is available for free from
the Downloads section of the Parallax website at
http://www.parallaxinc.com. For the BS2, you really need the Windows
version if you're going to run it on a Windows machine. As I mentioned
above, there may be exceptions, but not under WinXP/2000 and not at the
last minute. Plan on the time needed to download a 3.3 megabyte program.
From here on I'm assuming you have a BS2.
You don't make it clear whether or not you have a serial port on your
computer; you just say you don't have a 9-pin port. On the assumption that
you have a serial port, I assume it's a 25-pin port. If so, I suggest you
get a 25-pin to 9-pin adapter (under $10 at Radio Shack) and use that port
instead of adding the complication of making a USB-to-serial interface work
for what you already describe as a last minute project. If you are having
difficulty identifying what the ports are on the back of your machine, look
for the serial port to be labeled COM1 or COM2, or maybe labeled something
like "101010."
I think this probably covers what you need to know to talk to whatever
version of the Stamp you might have, and the most likely pitfalls you might
face.
Good luck!

it all, but allow me to be more specific on my computer. I have a
parallel port that works with my BS1, but the CP doesn't recognize
the hardware. I also have a BS2, but I only have a 15pin port for it
and, of course, it won't work with my BS2. I do have two serial
ports, but I'll need an adaptor. I have no other computers, so I MUST
make this work somehow with my Basic Stamps (either one). I am no
longer on a short schedule because of these problems. I need to know
how to make one of these work. Please Help!
what you are dealing with?
You have a BS1, either on a Super Carrier board, or a Rev. D board, with
a parallel cable to hook it to the PC.
This doesn't work, correct so far?
The BS1 can only be programmed in DOS, so it will never work in WinXP or
Win2000. I run mine in a Win98 DOS Shell window.
It works fine, and I can have the BS2 Windows based editor open at the
same time, for cross checking communication variables, etc.
Now, you have a BS2, I'm assuming on a BS2 carrier board or Super
Carrier board, correct?
I don't understand the reference to a 15 pin port. Is that on the PC?
On what ever you are mounting the BS2?
If it's on the PC, that sounds like a game port or some other peripheral
port.
You say you have two serial ports. I'm assuming you mean on your PC,
correct?. By adapter, do you mean a DB-25 (25 pin) to DB-9 (9 pin) adapter?
They are quite inexpensive. Or privately mail me your address and I'll mail
you one. I have 2. Or you can get a female DB-25 head from your local
Radio Shack and make a cable per the Basic Stamp manual. And remember, if
the port on the back of the PC isn't male, it isn't a serial port.
As for the Windows editor for the BS2 and higher, I got it working fine
in Win2000. I was using a BS2 on Super Carrier board with the cable from
Parallax, and the old version of the Windows editor. So it will work, I
promise!
I would like to help you if I can, but your emails have been confusing
at times. Please clarify what you have and precisely what you are doing,
and it's a good bet someone on here can help!
It might also not be a bad idea to post a copy of the programs you are
trying to run on the Group file page, if it's not too big to quickly trace.
There might be something there. It's just a suggestion.
Regards
Don

Did you see the answer I gave you about 11:00 AM EDT? Do you have any
specific questions about it?
Jim H
connected to the parallel port (COM3) on the back of my computer
through my Super Carrier Board. However, when I try to use
the "identify" button on the Windows BS2 program, it says that it
detects the BS2, but for me to check the power supply. I have tried
several batteries and they have all been good. So I still don't know
what to do! When I try to program the BS1 with the super carrier
board connected to the parallel port, it says "hardware not found".
Those are my current problems. Please Help! What am I doing wrong?
I would post up the program, but I can't get the programs to
recognize the stamps, so they don't matter.

have you change some jumpers to switch from a BS1 to BS2. May want to check
to see if your board requires this also.

is what on your computer. It sounds like you have at least 2 large (25-pin)
connectors on the back. One will be female (all holes) and one will be male
(all pins). The one with holes is your parallel port (where a non-USB
printer would hook up). This one is known to the computer as LPT1. The
connector with all pins will be a serial port, known to the computer as
COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4 depending on how it is set in your CMOS setup. If
you have a 9-pin to 25 pin adapter, and the large end of the ADAPTER is all
female, then you are connecting to the male serial port, not parallel. The
BS1 can not be programmed through the serial port, regardless of which
carrier board it is on.
