Somting other than a 8522?

Sorry for the other stuff. I just realized when I scrolled down the page
where the IDE interface is, that he orignaly used a basic stamp 2. Being
the hick that I am, I just assumed he used a Pic when I read the top of the
page:P

I am wondering if there is another way to interface. The local frys and
Radio Shack dosn't have any 8522's, but has alot of spare normal chips.
(flip-flops, gates). I work at a junk, electronic store too, so I got about
a hand full of bios 128-256k eeprom chips and 32k Static cashe ram chips.
But I am unsure how I can interface them without using the 8522.

Does anyone have any good websites about baisc micocontroler
design/interfacing? I wouldn't have this problem if I had more than 2 8-bit
ports from my basic stamp.

I DID atleast do somting:) We had a bucket of Dallas clock chips. I did
manage to interface it with the stamp, but it was late and needed sleep:P
DS1387. Its an odd chip, but lots of neet features. It can save the time
in its regesters in BCD format or just standard HEX, so its really easy to
display. It also has 4k of battery backed up static ram, that only uses 12
pins. It uses a multiplexed address/data bus, but you have to send the
address twice, still, it gives me some good speed vs a serial eeprom.

Only problem is that, since the battery is built in, I am not sure how long
it has left. I mean in "theory" it lasts 10 years after its first power on,
but I don't know of many batterys that last 10 years.
