Hi all,

does anyone know of any good Circuit Simulation sofware, both A and D?

Please email me at rilyasov@n... with any info.

I greately appreciate it!

Thank you.

The Piclist members have been talking about this very subject lately. The
general consensus is that the FREE package offered by Linear Technology is
excellent. The package is called Switcher CAD III and can be downloaded
from <http://www.linear-tech.com/software/>. Its a 2.8 Mb download and
includes a decent schematic entry package as well.

The libraries and SPICE models can be added to at will: there appears to be
no problem adding parts from NS and other semi manufacturers.

I have played with it but have not developed any expertise with it
(yet). But it is free for the cost of a download and is well worth
    checking out.

Switcher Cad III - "LTC SwitcherCADT III is a fully functional Spice III
simulator with enhancements and models for easing the simulation of
switching regulators" is nice if you're designing a switching power supply
(with LTC parts) but it doesn't do much else.

Try this link: http://www.audioscientific.com/Circuit%20Simulators.htm for a
few ideas on low cost and/or free analog and digital circuit analysis tools.

Tom - have you tried it?

From what I have seen, it appears to quite nicely simulate much more than
just switch mode power supplies. I'm not suggesting that it should be the
only tool one should use - quite the opposite.

But the question was: "where can I find a free simulation program". Not
only does SwitcherCAD meet that requirement, it is supported by a major
manufacturer and updated frequently. Linear Technology appears to do a
build on average once a week - just keep track of the file date on the
    download page.

In addition to being a reasonable simulation package, it contains a
kick-*** schematic entry module. The package is worth the download just
    for that.

    dwayne

Quote from Linear Technology's download page:

"Included in this download are Spice, Macro Models for 80% of Linear
Technology's switching regulators and over 200 op amp models. Furthermore,
resistors, transistors and MOSFET models are included as part of this
package. With this Spice simulation, viewing of the waveforms of most
switching regulators can be achieved in a few minutes on a high performance
PC. Also, full circuits using op amps or transistors can easily be simulated."

Notice the last sentence in the above quote.

    Quotes from several Piclist members:

    From: Tom Messenger <krist@T...>

I'd recommend LT SwitcherCad which despite the name, is a full spice
implementation. Plus, it really does switchers nicely too. I've mentioned
this program several times of late and someone might well get the
impression that I'm recommending it in place of circuit testing with real
parts. It is a very good tool to try out many ideas and see which ones look
    promising.

    From: Larry Bradley <lhbradley@I...>

And you can download other spice models from other manufacturers and use
them. For example, I downloaded a LF411 op amp from National, then modified
a basic op-amp "symbol" that LTC provided to use the LF411 model and
    presto! It works.

    From: Larry Bradley <lhbradley@I...>

    >How do you add other manufacturer's models to SwitcherCAD?

I downloaded the LF411 SPICE model from National.

Then I copied the "opamp2.asy" symbol and renamed it 'lf411.asy"
Made the following changes in the lf411.asy file(changed the two lines to
read as follows - note that in the SPICE model file the LF411 is actually
    named LF411/NS):

    SYMATTR SpiceModel LF411/NS
    SYMATTR Value LF411/NS

Finally, you need to add the following SPICE command to your SwCad simulation
    .lib LF411.sub

    From: Tom Messenger <krist@T...>

To amplify on Daves response, I *have* used SwitcherCAD III. I have two
    things to say about it:
    1. It correctly predicted how LT's switching power supply parts would work
in circuit. My scope waveforms looked like those on the PC.

    2. It is indeed a "full" spice version and it seems to work quite well. I
built a few state variable oscillators and it produced the output I expected.

Plus, as Dave said, "The price is right, for sure".

It was possible to confuse it until it gave poor output (probably was not
converging) but this is typical of any spice. It requires the user to know
what they are doing and not just blindly accept what it says. Doh!

I just downloaded it a month ago and found I like it a lot. I had tried it
years ago and did not like it. I suspect both it and I have matured. OK,
    maybe just it matured.

    From: "Peter L. Peres" <plp@A...>

    > I tried to simulate the 2 transistor circuit Roman published to the
    >list a while ago and I was not able to make it oscilate under switchCad
    >spice simulator ! Is there any tricks the can be made to make it work in
    >simulation ? I am absolutely sure it works in practice :-)

Open the tools->SPICE and set the max timestep to at most 1/20 of the
expected osc. period. F.ex. for 100kHz max expected osc. freq. set 5e-7

This is true for any .tran analysis in any spice program I know of.

MultiSim 2001 (2002?) is a good low cost package that can be expanded as
desired. It is also capable of adding PCB layout autorouting etc. It isn't
free but is great for beginners and technician level hobbyists, but also has
features required by Engineering professionals. It used to be called
    Electronics workbench.

As a side issue, does anyone know if Protel files can be converted to work
with any other (cheaper) packages, or if there are any other PCB
applications that can work with Protel files ?

    Regards,
    Justin.

I just downloaded their trial version, now to see if I can justify the $995
    price tag !
