Interfacing to MAXI Dual H-Bridge

I'm using mondo-tronics's MAXI Dual motor controller with a BS2SX. I've tried
sending a stop command by outputing a high on the 4 control pins, but when I
spun the motors by hand I couldn't tell if any braking was occuring. I tried
sending a PWM command to each motor while keeping the other pin low in an
attempt to spin the motors, and one of the P channel transistors immediately
blew up. The motors didn't budge. Does anyone have any experience interfacing to
these controllers? Thanks,
