windows millenium and basic stamp

Hi everyone. I just got my first basic stamp and am running windows
millenium. I was told millenium no longer supports dos, and that I
have to make a dos shell on a floppy disk from windows 98 or 95. I
dont have access to either 98 or 95, and I apparently just need the
dos exe. file from either operating system. I am VERY new to this and
was wondering if anyone has this dos exe. file or has had to do this.
If any one has the file or knows what the heck I am talking about I
would really be grateful if you could email me at
castle@s... . Thanks a lot , Jerry

If you are not using the Stamp I, just get the Windows editor from
www.parallaxinc.com -- it should work fine using ME although I don't run
    ME.

If you are using the Stamp I, you should have everything you need.
First, try going to Start | Run and enter

    Command.com

And press the Run or OK button. This should bring up a DOS command
prompt. Some computers will run the Stamp I software under Windows and
some won't. If it doesn't work, you'd need to create a boot floppy with
the Stamp I software. I'd imagine you could do this under ME but I don't
know for sure. The alternative would be to, from the Shutdown menu,
select "Shutdown to MSDOS mode" or something similar (does ME have
that--I don't know)? If you have that, just do that and you should be in
    business.

The trick to a boot floppy would be to open a command prompt in ME (or
on a 98 machine if necessary) just as I mentioned before. Take a floppy
disk with the Stamp software on it and put it in your A: drive. Then
    enter:

    Sys a:

This will make the floppy bootable. Put it in your computer, reboot the
computer, and you should go to a DOS prompt. If you don't, you'll need
to check your BIOS settings (when you boot the computer it should say
Press F2 or Del or something to enter Setup) and make sure the floppy is
your primary boot device. That won't bother your normal setup since you
would normally boot with no floppy. Unfortunately, there is a lot of
different BIOS setups, so I can't give you explicit instructions on how
    to do that.

Hope that helps! If you are just getting started, be sure to read the
    FAQ at http://www.wd5gnr.com/stampfaq.htm

Well, that's why I said, "or a Win98 machine if necessary".

I am told you can make a boot disk in Windows ME using Settings |
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and creating a Startup disk.

    http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/winme/dosfacts.html

ME is the one thing we never run around here. I have one 98 machine and
everything else was on Win 2000 and is now on XP Pro.

It does in mine. Try searching your C: drive for a file named SYS.COM. My
ME system has one in the C:\Windows\Command\ subdirectory. This is where
the usual MS-DOS programs and utilities are located.

My machine is a Dell 4100, but I can't imagine so much difference between
manufacturers that someone else wouldn't provide the basic MS-DOS files.

    Jim,

Although sys.com is available in windows ME, it will not allow you to
format a floppy disk. To create a start up disk, goto start - settings
    -
control panel - add remove programs - start up disk - to create a boot
floppy from windows ME. (Does this mean RTFM?) :-)

Umm... Unless Microsoft re-invented the wheel since Win98, SYS.COM is used
to copy the hidden files (IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS) of the operating system from
one drive to another -- it does not format the drive. If I remember right
you still need to copy COMMAND.COM to the drive to make it bootable. And if
you are doing this to a floppy that is not blank, it won't work because the
OS does not reserve a place on the floppy for the boot files before allowing
    you to write to it.

Yes - in as polite a way as I could put it - and a "fine" manual it
    is! ;-) See comments below.

It doesn't "work," or it doesn't "exist?" I can type SYS A: in a DOS
window on my ME system and it works just fine - meaning I get a very
meaningful response when I do it telling me I can only SYS C: and to make a
boot disk I need to go to my Startup menu and... etc. If the guy had tried
it he wouldn't have had to respond to Al's message so I assumed (with
tongue planted firmly in cheek) from his response:

    1. He really didn't have a SYS command at all; i.e., the file was missing.
    or
    2. Number one being very unlikely I responded as I did knowing the attempt
to run the file he really had would solve his problem by directing him to
    the answer he needed.

I suppose I was also feeling a bit peevish that so many folks who want help
could try to be a bit more forthcoming and more precise. "This does not
WORK in ME" is accurate and meaningful - though once one tries it and sees
the resulting message the problem is then solved. "This does not EXIST in
ME" is accurate, but considerably less meaningful. It leads one to wonder
if he is missing SYS.COM entirely, and it also leads one to be certain he
isn't very forthcoming with accurate and meaningful info to help folks help
    him.

Looking back on it I was in error - I should have responded as briefly as
he did by saying, "SYS A: runs on my ME system." This would have been an
improvement because it would have been terse in the spirit of his response,
accurate in the spirit of his response, and meaningless in the spirit of
his response. Yet, if he would just run SYS A: as implied (if he hadn't
already) he would have the answer he seeks. Too late now! ;-)

BTW, you're in for quite a ride getting comfortable with Stamp math. If
you'll run thru all your calcs from left to right hitting = on a calculator
(or viewing the result on an RPN calculator like mine) after every single
operation, then dropping the decimal portion of the result before
continuing, you'll probably make better sense of it. A quick read thru the
math section to see what operations produce results of what "bitness" and a
few notes on a 3X5 card will also help. There's not a freaking thing
intuitive about it. I'm guessing as an instructor you're fairly good at
algebra - and that's actually a fairly serious disadvantage you'll need to
work to overcome because the Stamp violates all rules involving precedence
of operations, and doesn't maintain the precision you intuitively expect.

    Have fun!

Please, if possible, excuse my bad english language.
In the future, I will avoid to answer if it seems to cause
    such trouble.
Note also that I tried it before my answer, to be sure, and
that a startup disk leaves only about 232KB free on the disk.

    ECO,

Your English is perfectly understandable - far better than my German or French.

    >In the future, I will avoid to answer if it seems to cause such trouble.

It would be even better if you do answer, but provide some information that
allows people to help you instead of information almost anyone with a
Windows ME system would think is incorrect.

    >Note also that I tried it before my answer, to be sure, and

This is good information. You told me what you did and what the results were.

My own Startup Disk has 422 KB free. It seems to depend on the size of
your Registry and maybe the number or size of the basic drivers required
    for your hardware.

Do you really need more than 232K free on your disk? After booting from
the disk you should be able to run programs found on your hard drive. Did
you try to do that? If you did, what happened?

Now what would life be if we could NOT have a difference of opinion? If
we all thought alike, we would not be sharing what we all knew.
    Diversity is good.

Seems to me you mean by your phase, "that sloooowwwly,,,,,the
world,,,(including us)" is those people whose business it is to control.
Some of us are not rich, don't have a lot of money or power and never
hope to have. For those who need the popualtion to follow allong with
their wishes and whems, the you are right, "diversity IS NOT GOOD".
They are those who say, "sit down and shut up, by the way do it because
    'IIIIIIIIIIIII' told you so..

    thanks for your comments,
