74LS165 - Parallel in/serial out

Anyone using a '165 with the Stamp 2?? I can't seem to make it work. I have
the reverse function device (74HC595) working just fine but the 165 is giving
me a problem.

One possible thing is the clocking of the device. The '595 transfers the data
to the outputs when you pulse the "latch" pin. I don't see a similar pin on
this device.

Any help out there??

Mike B.

    Hi Mike:

I have several 165's in series and they work great. Data from paralell
inputs is outputted to the stamp on pin 7. Use 1 for your enable low and
and 2 for clock. You will need 3 leads to your bs2. Pin 16 is 5V pin 9
goes to 10 to daisy chain 8 & 15 are grd. the rest are inputs. Use the
    shiftin X,Y lsbpre [datain\16] for 2 devices.

    Ok Eric:

Thanks a lot!! I got screwed over by a clip lead that is OPEN !!!
Arrrgggg... It is work now but a bit strange. I will go make the changes
you suggest. Thanks, you saved me 2 stamp pins from the way I was trying to
make it work. I'm going to eventually be reading a two digit, BCD
    thumbwheel switch..

The 74HC165 works very well with the Stamp 2 -- I use them all the time.
Download the StampWorks documentation and code from the Parallax site for a
    working example and documentation.
