An alternative approach to moving a pen is to move a laser diode beam,
using the voice-coil or galvo scanner mirror deflection approach for
2-dim drawing. It is easier to program the laser diode for OFF/ON
states than designing a pen UP/DOWN mechanical system as used in drawing
plotters. Only major drawback is you have to use photo sensitive paper
or other media in the dark. Still, photo paper is pretty cheap.

market and use its mechanical parts. A Stamp could be used to drive the
plotter's X and Y precision pots, as well as the pen up/down solenoid.
Before digitizer tablets were affordable, I built one from an old
plotter by moving the pen by hand and sending the output of the X and Y
biased pots to an A/D converter on a lab computer. It was used to
digitize the diameters of a few thousand axons in peripheral nerve from
micrographs of nerve cross-sections.

Yea, but then you have to fix the paper with a devolpers and fixers A
pen (or a pencil) on a solonid? Ben
