8 latched input device

The 74HC595 is a serial 8 bit latched OUTPUT device which can be used as per the
example in the book for controling LED's. Does anyone know the part number for
the REVERSE function?? That is I want to monitor and serially input the status
of 8 switches. I need latched inputs as the switch input may be momentary and
not seen by the Stamp if it is busy elsewhere.

Thanks Mike B.

Current project:

Stamp controlled 1/32 nd scale submarine NOT using conventional R/C
equipment..

As per previous post, plus the 74HC166 is also a 8 parallel in to serial out
    IC.

I'm don't know of any single device that does as you request. A 4021 will
serialize data easily enough but it does not 'latch' input events on its
own. An 8255 PIA can do this but its data buss is 8 bits wide.

You can wire up a bunch of Set-Reset Flip Flops (4043 and 4044 quad SR
latches come to mind) where input events are latched. Those, in turn, can
feed a 4021 to serialize the data. You will need an additional line from
the Stamp to reset the FFs after they have been read.

You could 'roll your own' into a single chip by using a PLD. Its not that
hard to do and the parts are inexpensive. Look at the Altera and Lattice
    web sites.
