Co-processor interfacing

I am considering the use of the AVR microcontroller chips to offload
some of the lower level tasks such as sensor monitoring. Also, I'd
like the Stamp (BS2E) to send commands to a co-processor that is
tasked with driving the motors and monitoring the encoders. I've
found a number of AVR links that drive motors and/or count pulses,
but none that seem to share this information with a Before I go and
reinvent the wheel, can anyone point out some links that have already
done this? In particular, I'm intrested in the code used to
accomplish the communication.
