I am working on a serial input - dual digit LED display using comman
anode displays. THey are large displays which require 6.8 Vforward to
turn on. THe on current is 10ma I believe. I know you can use a
MAX7219 for regular displays but I know it isn't enough to power the
large 2.25" display.. I am also not sure if the Common Anode is for
use with the driver chip.
Thanks for any help!

It is made Lumex. The data sheet provided is at
http://www.lumex.com/gallery/images/drawings/1000157.PDF
the data sheet is not very descriptive, but the segments each have 4
led's in them making them light at 6.8 volts.

6.8 v seg 7 segment display driver
an came up with:
http://www.intersil.com/data/AN/AN0/AN054/AN054.pdf
don't know if this will help, but it might be a start in the right
direction. How many of these displays do you need to drive? If only a
couple, then transistor or other type of solid state switching circuit
would do. I believe this article has diagrams about how to do that.
Let me know if it don't work for you..
