basic stamp 1 programming connections

What would a list be without stupid questions from newbies!

I am new to the basic stamp but not to tinkering with electronics. I
can't seem to program the basic stamp 1 that I just got.
I followed the wiring digram for programming the stamp and did
continuity tests on my cable but I can't seem to get my stupid "hello
world" program to download to the stamp.
here is my connection information
parrallel port stamp pin
pin 25 pin 2
pin 11 pin 3
pin 2 pin 4

The only thing the diagram doesn't say is where to connect power!
But, I assumed (bad idea) that I should connect my 9v battery ground to
pin
25 which is the parrallel ports ground and the positive lead to pin 1
of the stamp. Is this correct? If it is then why is it that when I
connect the stamp to the computer and hit alt-r the program tells me
that the "hardware [is] not found".

Please help!
Steven

If I recall, yes... Pin 1 is Vin. You should see 5V on pin 5 if you have
    that right.

Are you running the Stamp I software? Under DOS or Windows? Some people
have trouble running it under Windows. It certainly doesn't run under
    Windows NT/2000/XP.

under Dos. I don't know what is wrong with this thing. The software doesn't
have any configuration steps, so I
figure it should work out of the box.. so to speak. Do you recall what ground
on the 9v should be connected to?

    Thanks,
    Steven

Pin 2 should be ground. Do you have 5V on pin 5? Do you have a different
computer or printer port to try it on?

    Charles E. Fromage says:

Assuming you have the Stamp powered up correctly, are you sure your printer
    port is available in DOS?

On some PC's the ports don't exist except in Windows -- strange stuff.
Anyhow, this is how you tell:

Boot up in DOS or restart in DOS from Windows

At the DOS prompt, type DEBUG and press enter -- you will see a "-" prompt.

Type D0:0400 and press enter -- those are zeros and not the letter O! A
whole mess of numbers will be displayed.

The first line should begin with 0000:0400 -- there are 8 groups of two
characters and a dash -- these represent the serial ports found in DOS.

After the dash is where you find the parallel ports DOS knows about -- LPT1
would show up as 78 03 in the first two pairs of characters. Likewise LPT2
would show up as 78 02 in the second two pairs of characters.

If its not there, it does not exist in DOS. If its got the wrong address --
ie the first two pairs are not 78 03 -- you need to be sure the parallel
port is hard-coded to an address in the BIOS and not set to auto.

    This is what I got:
    0000:0400 F8 03 F8 02 00 00 00 00-78 02 00 00 00 00 00 00

Looks like LPT2 is available in DOS. Does the parallel port have to be
bi-directional for this thing to work?
What are my other options? The windows version is only for BS2 right?

    command line...

I did and it doesn't say, I think they (parallax) would prefer that you buy
    their cables.

I hooked my stamp to the serial port and it works fine. Did you mean
    Parallel Port ?

Looks good except LPT2 is in the slot where LPT1 should be. Check your CMOS
/ BIOS settings and make sure LPT1 is set to 0378 and not AUTO -- when its
in auto, Windoze does the configuration and the port works in Windows and
    not in DOS.

As far as I know, there is no Windows editor for the BS1.
